Really? REALLY? -Wednesday, November 4th 2009

Nintendo announced the  DSi XL.  That’s right “XL” as in extra-large.  Bigger, more robust.  GIGANTIC!  You may need help carrying it around.  Maybe this is Nintendo’s way of secretly getting you to work out.  Get those arms nice and buff…okay, okay, done with the jokes…
Now for specs! Actually, the only thing I’ll mention is that the screens are nearly a full inch larger(measured diagonally) 4.2” compared to 3.25” for the DSi.  Everyone loves a larger screen, much easier to see what you’re doing.  It should also make it easier to touch what you want to on the screen with the stylus(I’ve heard complaints about the fickleness of that in games like Scribblenauts.)
No price has been announced yet for North America, United Kingdom, or Europe.  We can only hope that it will be the same price as the original DSi. It has been stated that it will be released Q1 2010.  You know…during that time when all those delayed games are releasing.
One disappointing thing that should be noted is, if you have a DSi now and plan on upgrading, any DSiWare software you’ve downloaded probably won’t be able to be transferred to the new DSi. This is something Nintendo really needs to fix if they want to be able to sell the same handheld over and over again to their cult-like following.
I’m actually kind of excited for this, as long as Nintendo doesn’t take SONY’s pricing model and sell it for an exorbitant amount.  I still have an original DS…the very first one that they released.  It’s definitely time for an upgrade.  Of course I’m going to wait and see on how games actually look on the larger screen.  It’s possible that they could look absolutely terrible.  I’d also need to actually hold one and see how it feels in my hands.  Comfort is paramount in a handheld.
It’s an odd world that we live in when we have the PS3 being a good value, the DSi being huge, and the PSP being tiny.  What are your thoughts?  Is bigger better?  Or is this Nintendo finally going a step to far?
